A few basic tips for Return to Castle Wolfenstein for any player who asks
Type these into console or your "wolfconfig_mp.cfg" (C:/Program Files/Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Main)
/r_gamma 3
/r_intensity 3
/r_OverBrightBits 3
/r_MapOverBrightBits 3
[this will make everything brighter which means more kills and easier kills! ]
However, BaD mod (type of server) allows these up to "4" in each value of the above, yet Shrub Mod
(another type of server) only allows a maximum of "3" so be careful or you may get kicked by
PunkBuster. If you want to use "4" on BaD servers then I suggest editing the "wolfconfig_mp.cfg"
in the 'badclan133' folder in "C:/Program Files/Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and for other servers
use a maximum of "3"
/sensitivity 1.4 / 1.6 / 1 / 0.8
[try these and see which one suits you better, it makes accuracy better and hs aiming easier]
My own sensitivity started off as the default "5" until I was able to know the game better. I
later converted it to a lower senstivity (as seen above) which enabled better accuracy and
more headshots.
However, if you are a "lazy player" as I call them, you can use a high sensitivity. This allows
more free movement around the map and more turn with the mouse, however be prepared to sacrifice
hs and accuracy for this ability.
I now use "0.8" sensitivity as my mouse (Logitech G5) works well with this. Higher sensitivity
can offer many more advantages such as easier movement around maps - however it can also decrease
accuracy and your headshot ratio is generally lower.
After jumping down or up something or an airstrike, press "END" and this will bring your
aim to Head level, making it more constant and more likely to be ready after moving your
x-hair a lot. This is called "centerview"
Use a small dot "o" at medium size for gameplay as a x-hair, trust me on this as it makes aiming
better!!! I didn't believe it either but it really helps as big crosshairs can block your view!
Also, this type of crosshair is perfect size for headshots too.
One of my many tips to developing players would be that for some rounds, turn off sound:
/s_volume "0"
I say this because without the gun noise, it makes aiming a LOT easier and you are less likely to
become distracted in combat. However, you cannot hear airstrikes being called/fired and other players
can stab you easily without you realizing they are near therefore I would only say use this on well
known maps such as mp_base or mp_village. So on maps where you are more likely to stay still or in
one position e.g. mp_beach or mp_depot I would put volume back on:
/s_volume "0.8"
When defending a part of the map (e.g. Northeast Tower - mp_base) use lean "q" or "e" to give you
an advantage and suprise oncoming enemies. Also use the map layout to your advantage, use obstacles to
hide behind and take cover, corners are good for getting chased and then hs'ing your enemies
Beware though, as smart/experienced players will also do this - or counter your movements by going back
and forth over your view, DO NOT be tempted to follow/shoot at them as this will waste ammo because
of the large chance of missing, plus you then lose the advantage and this will make you more
vunerable.
Try to avoid 2v1 situations as much as possible - either move quietly and use suprise tactics or
do as I like to and go bursting in (make sure you have a medic with you if you choose this tactic)
- when in a 2v1 or more situation, if there is a medic kill them firstly to stop reviving, then aim
for HS HS HS!!! keep moving + don't stop. DO NOT CROUCH as this makes you an easy target and the
enemy then has the advantage... that is unless you are shooting from distance.
One great tip that I use and love totally, if there are 2 enemies, use the nearest one to you as a
blocker and an advantage, his team-mate will not shoot at you for risk of killing his own team-mate, which means you
can use the nearest enemy to hide behind. Be careful of some players however who will shoot at you whether there
is a team-mate there or not. So be clever and use your enemies to your advantage.
You will find in-game many people wearing different clan tags, it is essential that you DO NOT steal
or imitate these clan tags in anyway as this will only make other players angry and less likely that
you join clans in your future wolfenstein career.
There are different types of clans on different versions of Wolfenstein. For example, there are a
number of beginner skill clans - they tend to have skilled leaders and many newer members as recruits.
As a new player it is good to apply/join these clans as they improve your attitude and ability in-game.
Be careful, not all newer clans are good, some have just been shoved together to allow people to
wear tags and these will not improve your skill or ability, however there can be exceptions. Look for a
clan that fits your style of play.
(the above about clans is my own opinion and based on personal experience)
/com_maxfps 43 / 76 / 125
This is how many "Frames Per Second" your computer shows, the lower the number the more jumpy your
gameplay will be. High FPS means a smoother gameplay, but it depends on how many your pc can give
out as some may only do around 76 (which is what I use).
/r_subdivisions "999"
This makes everything appear bland and have no details at all. I know this sounds ridiculous yet
it gives your pc more graphic power to generate more frames per second. It is strange at first but
really good when you get used to it
/cg_drawgun "0"
This means the computer will not show your weapon or selected item. I prefer this so you can
see more if you set it. Again this is strange and takes some getting used to, but it clears
the bottom right of your screen. In addition, headshots are much easier to hit meaning quicker kills.
One thing you will notice is that some players have low pings, and others have high pings. As I am
a UK'er I have 181 ping - 200. This is pretty high. Basically, low pingers have the advantage as the
server response is quicker and they will see things slightly faster than you if you are a high pinger.
Yet it all depends on your location, if you are in the US then your ping will be low on most servers,
as Euro's are at a disadvantage mostly along with Aussies.
/r_uifullscreen "0"
This will clear any fog within game, meaning long distance shooting is made easier. You may have
to toggle this on and off to get fluent graphics so bind keys to "Toggle r_uifullscreen" in-game.
Preferably, I myself don't use this as I have never had the need to, yet other players use this
frequently and swear by it. It is your own choice to use this.
Other settings for CFG's (configs) are useful also to maximize fluency in-game and steady Frames
Per Second (mentioned earlier).
Such settings are:
/snaps "40"
/cl_maxpackets "100"
For choice of weapons, my preference is the MP40, meaning any class on axis but mainly LT on allies.
The MP40 has more accuracy and therefore headshots are easier to hit and the fire rate of the MP40
is slightly quicker than the thompson. However, the thompson may fire slower and have a wider spread
yet the damage is greater and much better for close-up fighting. This is why many players use the
MP40 on larger maps. Sten is altogether totally different, it is the most accurate of the guns,
yet after a certain number of rounds it will overheat, meaning you are defenceless. Sten is again
prefered for larger, more open maps such as "mp_trenchtoast" - Sten also offers a better chance of
hitting headshots with the better accuracy.
Now, many people get annoyed and stressed out about "noobs" as these new players, or even rare gamers
tend to not fully understand situations which an experienced player will automatically know what to
do. What should you do with these players? Well most people moan and groan at them, this obviously does
nothing - except make the player think about doing it again to annoy people. The trick is to direct them
in-game and give them help.
Also, "crouching" is considered a crime worse than murder whilst playing. Now we could go on about
this topic for hours..but I shall not. It has its advantages such as long-distance shooting, however crouching
is also very bad as it makes you a sitting target for enemies...
In my opinion, crouching is ok for distance but up-close it really doesn't offer any real good
advantages.
/cg_fov "90"
This is almost like default setting. The "fov" setting is a horizontal view on how wide your screen appears,
this fov style will make everything appear closer, this is great for long distance and it is completely
within the rules of online gaming. No hacking involved.
/cg_fov "105"
This is the opposite of the one above, it makes things appear stretched. This enables combat up-close
easier meaning more headshots and more kills!! AGAIN NO HACKING! shocking I know!
Now to use these "fov" settings to full effect here is my own personal cfg setting:
/bind MWHEELUP "cg_fov 90"
/bind MWHEELDOWN "cg_fov 105"
If you don't have a mouse scroll or wheel, I would suggest binding keys such as "g" or "h" to do this
because they aren't far away from the move keys, meaning gameplay is not interupted with your movement
hand coming off the keys.
Now in-game you may notice other people using colours in their names. This is very easy to do.
First: use a ^ symbol
add a number after this symbol to represent colour
add the letter/number of your choice
For Example: "^4R^8i^4g^7g"
The colour list is as follows:
1 - Red, 2 - Green, 3 - Yellow, 4 - DarkBlue, 5 - LightBlue, 6 - Pink, 7 - White, 8 - Black
To set your name like this, drop down console with the ` button and type: "/name (space) your name
Also in-game, you may see other players using LOLS and special phrases. This is also easy to do:
Simply "/bind (key)" then type your action
E.g. : /bind L say ">==|LOL|==<"
/bind N say ">==|Nice Shot Man!|==<"
/bind - "setname WolfPlayer"
You can also use colours in these binds, just like making a name.
And lastly, GAMING MOUSE! In my opinion, a gaming mouse is totally vital in improving areas of gameplay
in killing, aiming and moving around the map - not to mention headshot aiming! I began with a standard
microsoft optical mouse which eventually died. It was ok, yet my mouserate was very low and accuracy was
difficult as the shape of the mouse and response were both poor. I then moved on to a ball mouse. This
could not have been a worse choice. It is to awful to even mention - unbalanced weight, no sense of
control and inconsistent aiming.
I later got my own pc with a Saitek GM3200 mouse, and I can find no faults in this.
These improve the shooting aspect of the game a lot and I would 200% recommend any player getting these.
My own mouse at the moment is the Logitech G5.
After changing mouse, the new one will feel uncomfortable and often aiming will suffer. My advice on this
would be to see it through and you will become accustomed to the newer mouse and shoot just as well (if not better)
with this mouse as your old one.
To prove this here are my stats on game:

Only RTCW 1.33 there are many different maps which need different playing styles and tactics if your
team is going to be successful, I will start by teaching a few points about easy maps that are usually
popular in-game with more experienced players.
Such maps include: Mp_beach + Mp_base
Mp_Base is one of my personal favourites on RTCW 1.33 as it offers a chance for extreme teamwork whether
the gametype is Objective or DeathMatch (limited lives). Basically the axis defend 2 radars which
the allies have to destroy via dynamite.
There are many tactical positions on base, such as behind radar 1 (axis) where an engineer can stay
hidden until called for. In addition, the are also many corners and tunnels which suit the gameplay
of headshot gamers such as myself or Inferno for instance. If you are a new player I suggest using the
inner compound route - I would advise upper as the lower can be a quick-death scenario for non-headhot
aimers.
Mp_Beach is also team based. Many occasions players retrieve the OBJ from the basement and are quickly
dispatched from the documents. Teamwork will provide cover and support and often distracts the enemy from
shooting at the OBJ carrier.
Airstriking (or A/S) is a very useful tactic for maps such as mp_beach or mp_base. The basics of A/S
is quite simple. If you are using the thrown a/s (appears to look like a small smoke grenade) then
KEEP IT AWAY FROM TEAMMATES is the first rule. A/S are useful for making the enemy split or stop what
they are doing such as planting dynamite.
AXIS AIRSTRIKES : RED
ALLIED AIRSTRIKES : Blue
Lt's or Leuitenants can only A/S if their charge is half full (limit bar, bottom right of screen).
However another tactic is to call in Artillery strikes near enemy spawns, again only LT's can do this
and the gauge MUST be full. To do this simply hold "B" for the binoculars, click "+attack" (mouse1)
to fire the A/S on the selected area you are aiming at. This gives 4 powerful blasts around this area.
To learn a more advanced way of doing this + a few tricks click the following link, demonstrated by
my fellow clan-member - 7|Ammo.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jVal06sS2U
Now some maps, as a newer player, you will find difficult to understand e.g. mp_depot and mp_ice.
This is because these maps are quite large in comparison to mp_destruction and most new players can
find themselves lost, however this is not difficult to get around. When I first started out I watched
many players (especially with clan-tags on) move around maps and learnt key things such as move whilst
shooting + jumping etc. This enabled me to learn maps easily and I suggest you do the same to learn your
way around the maps.
If you find yourself stuck or lost, don't hesitate to ask a 7|Member if they are also online and they
will be more than willing to help you. Just look out for the 7 tags : 7|(Name)| and they will never
turn away a player for help
Here are some basic tips for classes in-game:
As a Lt you should give ammo to others players on your team before yourself such as Medics or Engineers.
Also call A/S to hinder your enemies from completing OBJ's such as destroyig radars (mp_base)
As a Medic your main job is to revive others, so do this immediately before shooting enemies. Keeping
your team up is your job so get to it soldier Also, the same applies for health packs as for ammo
packs, give them to teammates before yourself as your HP will heal by 3 each time. Medics should ask
for ammo when spawned unless there is no LT near.
As a soldier you have a wide choice of weapons and these can be very entertaining to play with. For
example, the Panzerfaust or Panzer is a rocket prepelled shell with high damage, this is good for taking
out large numbers, yet can also be terrible if used wrongly e.g. teamkilling in 2's and 3's.
And lastly, as an engineer you are the key member to your team to either defend or destroy objectives.
Your teammates should work with you to aid you in any way, your goal is to defend/destory something
and you want to do this as soon as possible to give your team the best chance of winning the game.
Dynamite will take less time to plant as it does to defuse so make sure you are quick with planting
and get teammates to cover you when defusing to aid you. Simply use a combination of keys to do so:
" v 2 5 "
Other Voice commands are also useful:
V 2 1 "Need a medic" V 2 5 "Cover Me!"
V 2 2 "Need some ammo" V 3 3 "Move"
V 2 3 "Need Backup" V 3 5 "Defend Our Obj!"
V 2 4 "Need an Engineer" V 6 "States your current class"
Be careful though, these are just simple quick-chats and if they are overly used then team-mates begin
to ignore them and dislike you - for example the V 5 7 = "Cheer" if often used and can get annoying
when playing so be wise and use them when needed only
You may also notice, varied on servers that there are different types of gameplay; for example:
OBJECTIVE. This means there is a document or target for one team (or both e.g. mp_depot) to win
the match. This will need less teamwork and you will generally find on popular servers it is more
of a 1-man-showdown. To win this type of match you will need not only good skill but overall
knowledge of the maps e.g. more secretive routes.
Secondly, DEATHMATCH is often played on less popular servers which usually have more skilled players
as there is a limited number of lives on each team with the only available class as medic. You can gain
ammo with a voicechat of v-2-2. On DEATHMATCH you will need to kill enemies quickly (generally better
for headshot players) and also gib them to stop revives. Be careful of the noise you make and it is
important to work as a team on this gametype. Be careful not to rush into situations where you find
yourself outnumbered. For this you need to act wise.
And lastly there is the Capture the Flag gametype which speaks for itself. The only maps in rotation
on v1.33 are mp_sub, mp_trenchtoast and mp_destruction. These involve a lot of death and mass airstrikes.
It is important to keep safe on these types of map. I am not saying camp any place, but be careful in
your actions not to get exploded by a/s from the opposing team.
And that about completes my tips and settings for RTCW v1.33
I hope this information has been useful to you.
Enjoy your gaming!

and the gauge MUST be full. To do this simply hold "B" for the binoculars, click "+attack" (mouse1)
to fire the A/S on the selected area you are aiming at. This gives 4 powerful blasts around this area.
To learn a more advanced way of doing this + a few tricks click the following link, demonstrated by
